Over 8,000 illegal e-cigarettes have been seized in Derbyshire, UK in just a few months

 Since June of last year, more than 8,000 illegal e-cigarette products have been seized by the Trading Standards team of the Derbyshire Council from around 60 local businesses, as complaints from the public about non-compliant traders selling these products have increased five-fold in the past year.

This problem is being reflected across the country, with the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) reporting that the number of non-compliant e-cigarettes being sold by retailers is increasing and that the teams are struggling to cope.

 In February, billionaire Michael Bloomberg's philanthropic organization, the Bloomberg Philanthropies, announced an additional $420 million commitment to tobacco control, with a significant portion earmarked for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where 80% of smokers live.

The funds are intended to reduce tobacco use and protect non-users from harm. However, advocates for harm reduction, consumers, and some lawmakers worry they will be used to push policies that run counter to the public health interests of these countries.
